Budget "disappointing" for potential property owners
Measures announced by chancellor Alistair Darling in yesterday's Budget will offer limited support for the those planning to buy a home, it has been argued.
Calls had been made for the threshold for paying stamp duty to be raised, with a temporary decision to increase it from £125,000 to £175,000 having been made last September.
This had been due to expire after a year, but Mr Darling revealed that it will be extended until the end of 2009.
However, the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries suggested that complete abolition would have been a "bolder" step.
And director of the body Robert Sinclair added that the supply of mortgages would have been increased by a guarantee for lenders, stating: "It is disappointing the chancellor overlooked this crucial measure in such an important Budget."
The Land Registry's most recent figures revealed that the average London house price is nearly £300,000, meaning those seeking property in Clapham and other areas of the capital are unlikely to benefit from the stamp duty measure.
