Britons 'put off DIY while renting'
Young UK males lack confidence when it comes to carrying out basic DIY tasks, new research has found, which one sector commentator has attributed to the tendency for people to rent for longer.
According to a study from Screwfix, tasks such as bleeding a radiator, rewiring a plug or changing a lightbulb are a mystery to many men in their twenties, when compared to the males of their fathers' age.
Furthermore, six out of ten male residents admitted they hate DIY.
Commenting on the news, Duncan Hayes, editor at Build It magazine, said this trend was likely to have been prompted by fewer people starting out on the housing ladder early in their adult lives.
"When you are renting there is no incentive to fix things up. So if you have a problem with your house you go straight to your landlord, you can't go cavalierly trying to put up shelves," he added.
Britons looking for flats too rent in Hammersmith or another part of London may welcome the fact that they will be less likely to have to dig out their tool box if something goes wrong with their property.
