Boroughs recognised for support of councillors
London Councils has presented two of the capital's boroughs with an award recognising their support of councillors.
The Member Development Charter, which is backed by the Improvement and Development Agency, was granted to the Merton and Barking & Dagenham councils.
Chair of London Councils Merrick Cockell noted that steps taken by the boroughs had ensured that employees developed skills and knowledge.
"This not only benefits the councillors themselves, but also ensures that their residents receive the best possible leadership and services from their local council," he remarked.
Merton Council was praised for the over 100 visits cabinet members have made to community groups, while Barking & Dagenham council was found to have invested in public speaking skills to improve members' performances in debates and help them promote their roles to the public.
Last month Transport for London revealed that construction of the East London Transit was beginning in Barking town centre, making jobs and services more accessible for those living in the borough.
