Bethnal Green: 'Close to the city' in Bethnal Green
Background
Bethnal Green is situated in the London borough of Tower Hamlets in the east end of the city and is in the perfect location for easy access to everything the capital has to offer.
Globe Town in Bethnal Green was established some 200 years ago as an estate for local weavers, meaning the area is packed full of history. However, those who are looking for something a little more contemporary may be pleased to hear it is also situated close to Shoreditch, making it useful for those who hope to spend more time in this trendy and up-and-coming part of the city.
Meanwhile, sports fans may be interested to learn Bethnal Green has a strong history of boxing, with English champion Daniel Mendoza living in Paradise Row on the west side for a time.
Today, local leisure centre York Hall hosts regular matches for those who wish to see the sport in the place where it has been popular for generations.
Property
As with much of London, property in Bethnal Green does not come cheap.
According to the latest figures compiled by the Land Registry, the average price of a home in the London borough of Tower Hamlets stood at £334,209 in December 2009, a monthly rise of 1.6 per cent and a 0.9 per cent increase since the previous year.
This is in contrast to December 2008 figures, where the average property price fell by 11.6 per cent - only one of two December declines noted in Tower Hamlets since 1995, which may suggest it is becoming increasingly popular with house hunters.
Broken down, the statistics reveal the average cost of a detached property in Tower Hamlets is £422,826 - hardly small change for those on the average income looking to move there.
Meanwhile, a semi-detached home does not come much cheaper at £332,362, while a terraced building could set people back £356,461 and a maisonette or flat is valued at an average of £327,501.
Such figures may inspire Britons to instead consider property to rent in Bethnal Green.
Choosing a studio flat in the area will set people back just £988 a month on average, while a one-bedroom home costs £1,209 a month, a two-bed abode £1,525 and a three-bedroom place £1,816.
Transport
Bethnal Green is ideally placed to allow locals to enjoy everything the capital has to offer and as a result transport links are good.
There are underground stations located at Bethnal Green, Whitechapel and Stepney Green for swift access to other parts of London.
Meanwhile, there are also two mainline railway stations - Bethnal Green Railway Station (which is separate to the Tube) and Cambridge Heath.
Throw in several bus routes serving the area and commuters could find they are spoilt for choice.
Amenities
Bethnal Green boasts a variety of pubs, clubs and restaurants for people to visit, whether they are after some live music, a drink with friends or a romantic meal.
The Albion, The Birdcage, The Marquis of Cornwallis and The Hare are among the many drinking establishments in the area, while there are also plenty of shops for people to stock up on their basic amenities or a few luxury items.
In addition, there are also museums on offer, while the historical architecture adds aesthetic appeal to the area.
And with such easy access to the rest of London, people moving to Bethnal Green are sure to feel they have made the right choice.
