Athletics stadium to be refurbished
The London borough of Enfield is to gain a new Olympic legacy with news that the area's crumbling athletics stadium is to be saved.
Councillors agreed the £1.2 million plan today, the centrepiece of which is the installation of non-league football team Enfield Town as a permanent tenant and the restoration of the running track, the Evening Standard reports.
The decision was made with the Olympics in mind, the council said, amid concern that closure of the stadium would send the wrong signal out about the borough's attempts to gain an Olympic legacy.
Enfield will be boosted as a community by the move, said club chairman Paul Millington, who told the Standard: "It's fantastic news that we will have a stadium of our own from 2010 that will be the base for all sections of the club and a focus for the community as a whole."
Last month council leader Mike Rye said as the proposals were formulated that it was intended that the stadium should help local hopefuls to gain a place in the British Olympic team.
