Advice for warring couples forced to live together
Couples who are experiencing problems in their relationship but are forced to live together because of financial circumstances, should negotiate ways of living more harmoniously, it has been recommended.
Recent research by Shelter revealed nearly a quarter of people admit they or someone they know have had to stay living with their former partner because they cannot afford to live on their own.
The housing charity claims this could be due to the lack of affordable housing the UK has to offer.
Commenting on the research, Paula Hall, relationship psychotherapist at relate, advised such couples to sit down together and try and negotiate ways to allow them to live together without tension arising.
"[They should] try to manage their emotions more effectively, maybe through talking to friends, finding other ways of having emotional outlets and making sure it is being contained and controlled in the home," she added.
However, choosing flats to rent in Shoreditch or another part of London could allow one member of the couple to move out and live alone, without having to break the bank by buying a new home.
