Praise floods in for outgoing East End mayor

Tributes have poured in for the outgoing mayor of the east London borough of Tower Hamlets upon her departure from office.

Ann Jackson raised a record £70,000 for charity as mayor - half of which is going to the Stairway to Heaven Trust that was set up to commemorate the 1943 Bethnal Green air raid shelter disaster, which claimed 173 civilian lives.

Leaders of all but one of the capital's main political parties paid tribute to the popular figurehead upon her departure.

Labour council leader Denise Jones, Tory chief Peter Golds, Lib Dem leader Stephanie Eaton and Respect Independent group's Oliur Rahman all issued heartfelt praise for Ms Jackson.

The East London Advertiser quoted Conservative councillor Golds as saying: "You are without doubt one of the finest mayors we've had in this borough for many, many years."

However, Abjol Miah, the leader of George Galloway's Respect faction, failed to issue a statement, opting instead to delegate the task to his deputy, Shahed Ali.
