New mayor backs Croydon regeneration

London's new mayor has signalled he supports the regeneration plans for Croydon.

The local Wimbledon Guardian reported that Boris Johnson was asked about the new developments planned for the London area and threw his support behind the project.

Plans include the recently approved Croydon Gateway, which Mr Johnson described as "adornments" to the area. He is also reported to have said that he would support "wonderful new high rises" where they are appropriate.

Once completed, Croydon Gateway - also known as Ruskin Square - will boast apartments, affordable homes, open spaces, restaurants, offices and a new theatre.

Talking to the paper after Mr Johnson's comments, Conservative London Assembly member Steve O'Connell said: "Croydon Council is working hard to transform the borough after years of neglect.

"It's great to have the support and encouragement of London's new mayor and I am looking forward to working with him to deliver Croydon's much-needed improvements."
