London boroughs among pioneering green schemes
The London boroughs of Lewisham and Brent are among six locations that will adopt a new pioneering zero-tolerance approach to waste.
Brent and Lewisham are joined by four other locations across England under a scheme launched by the Department for the Environment, Fisheries and Rural Affairs.
Environment minister Jane Kennedy said: "These six Zero Waste Places will test what can be done to make it easier for people and businesses to change the way they view and deal with waste."
Lewisham's scheme involves an 'eco-street' initiative, in which a contest is to be held to find a street with at least 100 homes that will get extra help to improve its environment.
Such a move could help make Lewisham a greener and more pleasant borough in which to rent a flat or house.
Camden is also going green, with news emerging today that the borough has opened London's first biomass fuel station.
The council will be using it to fuel its own vehicles on a trial basis.
