Government considers extension of Crossrail
Crossrail services could be extended to the Thames Gateway area, the government has announced.
The region, which includes the London boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham, was visited by transport secretary Geoff Hoon.
He revealed that ministers are working with councils on ways to ensure residents benefit from the scheme, as part of plans to improve connections for residents.
"The government has committed £51 million to develop transport in the region and this is just one of many schemes we are supporting," said Mr Hoon.
He was speaking during a trip to Ebbsfleet, where he inspected plans to improve connections to London by building two new platforms for high-speed rail services.
Earlier this year, the government announced that a new company - High Speed 2 - had been formed to consider plans for a similar service to connect Londoners with Scotland and the West Midlands.
Along with Crossrail, the line would serve an international exchange station at Heathrow Airport.
