2009 - A year in renting

2009 - A year in rentingThe last year may be memorable to many Britons for numerous reasons - including the recession.

Indeed, as the credit crunch rumbled on and people made an effort to tighten their budgets, more people may have opted to look for flats to rent in Hammersmith or another part of London, instead of buying a home in the same area.

They may have made this decision due to Property prices in the capital being so high or through the difficulty they experienced securing a mortgage.

The National Landlords Association (NLA) has looked back on the other news of 2009 which affected both tenants and their Landlords.

It notes that in May, the government proposed setting up a Landlord register, which could provide details of reputable Landlords and make the process of finding a home to rent easier.

David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, commenting on this year's events, said: "The role of the private-rented sector has been recognised as increasingly important. The housing shortfall needs to be filled and the private-rented sector has an important role to play in providing this much needed housing."
