Immediately to the north of Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill is one of the little well kept secrets of Enfield, an excellent city village rather than a suburb, with superb resources and good access. It's fast becoming a firm choice for families who want a great environment for their kids, and for some commuting young professionals. It's sought after, enclosed and a little exclusive.
The centre of the district could be more villagey. A lovely little village green offers a superb sense of peace and tranquility, and has a cluster of great local shops and restaurants around it. Of course, there are larger stores nearby, particular over in Southgate.
The area is to an extent dominated by its principal green space, Grovelands Park, of which part is private, but most open to public use. It has an excellent boating lake, a nice bowling green and pavilion, and generally makes you feel like you just turned up in Kent or Sussex - a superb city park. Other huge green spaces include Trent Country Park to the north. Winchmore Hill has several primary and secondary schools within a reasonable walk - it'll take you less than quarter of an hour to walk to many of them.
Most houses here are Victorian detached cottages and great terraces which fill the roads around the main sections of Winchmore Hill. One of the best streets is Broad Walk, which features some superb detached houses with excellent gardens. In the west of the area, as it begins to approach Southgate, there are very large Edwardian and midwar semidetached houses. Most properties around here are substantial, excellently fitted out and very sought after.
Winchmore Hill is perhaps the most desirable location in Enfield and an excellent place for families and for relatively upmarket commutes looking for a genuine village feel.
