Area Comments
Named after the seven Elms on Pages Green, Seven Sisters is a thriving locality in Tottenham that has benefited hugely from the brownfield developments of the last few years. An ancient site, Seven Sisters, and one whose primary feature since the mid 19th Century has been the Seven Sisters Road. Along with its neighbour South Tottenham, Seven Sisters makes up N15, the most ethnically diverse area in the EU - a hugely multicultural and ethnic area, typical of North London and emblematic of its evolution as a place to live.
For much of the 70s and 80s the Tottenham and Holloway areas were considered a little bit downbeat. But as the explosion of property prices came, so the traditional population of places like Seven Sisters have been bolstered and added to by the introduction of more affluent incomers who have been pushed out from areas such as Islington and Highbury, in search of more affordable housing.
To a great extent Seven Sisters remains a truly inner London borough. It's still as ethnically diverse as anywhere, and remains a lively place full of independent grocers, great local restaurants and bars, as well as an excellent Latin Market. But the best of the old London is being kept here and added to by the introduction of more café society, more trendy bars, more upmarket restaurants, more small businesses, particularly around the new Stoneleigh Road development aimed at small and medium size companies specialising in creative areas. The area is being well regenerated with huge brownfield developments of flats. The new Bernie Grant Centre is one of the areas best achievements - a wonderful arts and community centre which runs events, has a great café and hosts gigs all the time.
Quiet streets spin off the wide, leafy main streets of Seven Sisters, streets which lead to a great nearby green spaces like Finsbury Park. Along these streets are found an excellent quantity of competitive, well maintained Victorian terraces and some larger Victorian semis, although in the streets near Downhill Park and similar areas you can also pick up detached Victorian cottages. The area is a real mixture, with some purpose built blocks of flats and even some new mews developments occasionally on the market.
Absolutely excellent for first time buyers or those looking for more bang per buck, Seven Sisters is full of excellent houses at good sizes - for very good money indeed.
