Area Comments
In the shadow of Brent Cross one of the best of the northern garden suburbs, East Finchley, is a thriving little community close to Muswell Hill.
Very relaxed, extremely friendly and with good amenities both immediately available or a very short journey away, East Finchley is rich with local history and culture, is extremely popular with the acting, literary and journalistic community, and is now popular with families as well having a great, mixed local population, and is also a good bet for couples.
Mostly built in the late 19th Century, much of East Finchley's housing dates from this time. There are some lovely roads of Victorian terraces all around the area, and to an extent this is the character of the district. But within these Victorian properties there are of course some excellent subdivided flats and maisonettes available, with good garden level flats being very popular.
There are however a large number of other housing alternatives in the East Finchley area - there are great new builds available, with new houses and some sensitively developed new blocks alongside the 1960s flats that are part of the skyline - with the best and most distinctive of these being Prospect Ring, a triple 11-storey tower in which some lovely ex-council flats are sold. Definitely the most significant area of housing however is Bishops Avenue, famous millionaires row, where some truly epic properties (historically owned by some famous and famously wealthy types) are seen, although of course, these are rarely on the market.
Amenities in East Finchley are excellent, with great local stores and produce and easy access to larger supermarkets and of course, Brent Cross is a tiny step away (although shielded by the North Circular). Some really popular local bars and restaurants provide good eating and drinking alternatives if you fancy staying close to home, but of course one can always make the short journey to Crouch End or Muswell Hill, or even Highgate, all of which offer even more in terms of entertainment and dining.
East Finchley is immortalized by being the home of Peter Sellers and a hangout for Mick Jagger and George Michael, and is still arty, carefree and a great place for anyone from the professional to the growing family to find a good-value home.
