Area Comments

Perfect for affordable housing and commanding some fantastic views over the river towards Docklands, Charlton has a huge range of properties and great facilities - but remains underrated.

Partly this is because of its more famous neighbours, Blackheath and Greenwich, both of which are historically expensive and desirable. But a bit of snobbishness does wonders for those looking for spacious housing within touching distance of these two chic areas, but without the impact on the wallet.

Charlton is known for its community spirit and the village really feels like a village, tucked as it is beside the grandeur of Charlton House, the 17th-century mansion which faces out over the river and which fronts Charlton Park. The local football team, Charlton Athletic, is no longer in the Premiership but this has done nothing to impact the popularity of its fixtures with the happy, extremely friendly supporters.

Facilities nearby include great shopping here, in nearby Greenwich and Blackheath, as well as bargains in Woolwich. Also nearby is the excellent O2 complex with its mixture of events, cinemas and eateries.

Housing in Charlton is a mainly Victorian terraces and semis, both on 2 and 3 storeys, which line the streets alongside Charlton Church Lane up to Charlton Heights and into the Village itself, although there are streets of more recent builds here as well. The general standard of the Victorian properties is excellent, particularly on the West side of Charlton. There are large blocks of council and ex-council properties, some of which are imposing and impressive and provide some of the best views over the river. Some of the less pleasant council housing has been pulled down in recent years to be replaced by modern, high-spec housing for first time buyers and small families.

Great community, great sport and excellent facilities as well as a good range of property make Charlton an excellent place to purchase for large and growing families.
