Area Comments

Mayfair is situated between Oxford Street, Regents Street, Piccadilly and Park Lane in the very centre of the city. The name Mayfair comes from the 15 day fair that was previously held in the area.

The fair was stopped by the aristocratic citizens of Mayfair because they felt it was attracting undesirable people from poorer areas of London. The houses in Mayfair are very large and attractive - the area has always attracted the rich and influential. Mayfair is close to many beautiful parks and historic squares including Berkeley Square, Hanover Square and, of course, Grosvenor Square which is the site of the American embassy with a statue of Franklin D. Roosevelt dominating the centre of the square.

However, Mayfair is not always as fancy as you'd imagine. In fact, it's quite possible to get a perfectly decent pint here without having to suffer sneering bar staff or horrified patrons.

But before you find it necessary to start trawling the streets for bars and eateries of which Mayfair, unsurprisingly, has more than a few, there is plenty to check out during the day.

Undoubtedly you'll want to start the day's festivities on Bond Street (or rather New Bond Street and Old Bond Street to be correct). The place is absolutely packed with all manner of shops and boutiques including all the big outlets of the major retailers. Be careful, you could spend all the money in the world down here - if you had it.

Saville Row lies in Mayfair and is world famous for the quality of its tailors and materials. You may also wish to visit Shepherds Market - a pedestrianised maze of coffee shops, pubs and restaurants just off Piccadilly.

Mayfair is full of refined hotels where affluent foreigners stay, the impressive 18th century edifices of Mayfair are resided in by people of fabulous wealth although Arabs, Americans and East Asians generally outnumber the aristocrats today.

Mayfair is peppered with the swankiest hotels, the most exclusive restaurants and bars in the world, and the trendiest nightclubs for the rich and famous, but this can all be easily forgotten when spending an afternoon enjoying a pie and a pint at The Guinea Grill on Bruton Street.
