Area Comments
An excellent commuter town in the broad belt of fine commuter areas around Bromley, West Wickham is amply provided with the kind of amenities - and the kind of houses - that its core market loves.
For starters the main streets are stuffed with shops - there is a wide array, at least two major supermarkets buttressing the principal retail area, and between them a range of high street brands, boutiques, hairdressers, salons and cafes. There are excellent reliable and popular restaurants as well as more individual places to eat, and a good smattering of local pubs that residents spend their time in - both the modern gastropub and a few diehard locals. If you want truly gargantuan shopping experiences you should head to Croydon and Bromley, both about quarter of an hour away. The entire region is very countrified, with excellent golf courses, parks and walks everywhere, and West Wickham is approached via lovely, countrified roads from several directions, particularly to the south which is very open and rural.
Most of West Wickhams property retreats in an orderly fashion away from the high street and main roads. This is an area that to a huge extent is dependent on families and commuters for its life, and the property bears this out. The typical 1920s semi, a staple of the Bromley region, is the mainstay here of the housing market, with a small amount of terracing is seen here and there, and around the high street and the rail station you can also find good flats.
West Wickham's housing is predominantly semi-detached and detached although some terraced housing and flats are available near to the high street and station. A vast majority of the housing dates from the 1920s and green fields still surround this leafy town to the south.
A great compromise between a slightly faceless and anonymous sprawl and a tiny village, West Wickham is nicely plugged into the Southeastern network of towns and villages, a hop to the south and you're in expanding countryside, but it's got its own heart and soul as well.

In General:
The London boroughs are administrative centres responsible for collecting local taxes (Council Tax and Business Rates) and then spending the funds received on local services. They are run by Borough Councils who are elected by borough residents on a four year cycle. The totals that they spend will depend on the rates of tax that they levy plus funds allocated from central government and other sources.
While many of the services (schools, roads, planning, rubbish collection and social services) are standard, levels of provision will vary according to the overall political will as expressed by the voters.
Your tax liability (as a resident) will be based on the council tax band of your home. These bands are set by Valuation Officers and there is scope for appeal. The rate bands are then used to determine the amounts of tax levied. So, while the bands will remain largely constant the levels of tax can go up and, in theory, down.
You may claim discounts or exemptions based on your circumstances. For example, as the only adult in a property you can get a 25% reduction on your bill. Other reductions are available for qualifying second adults and Council Tax Benefit claimants.
There is more information available at the HM Customs & Excise website.
