Area Comments

A lovely residential area and extremely civilised, Teddington is the site of the biggest lock on the Thames, and sits between Twickenham and Hampton Wick. It's a very pleasant and genteel area with great resources and excellent places to live.

Green space - it borders the lovely Bushy Park and Hampton Court Park - the river and excellent schools bring families to Teddington; it's highly sought after and most of its property is very desirable indeed. There are gorgeous waterside houses here, which comprise the most fought-over homes in the area. In the roads around the centre - Teddington is pretty much bisected by a lovely road of shops, cafes and restaurants that runs from the river to Bushy Park to the Thames - are found some lovely family houses, and there are excellent flats around the train station where the majority of the young professionals seek good starter homes in one of the best riverside locations, as well as some lovely developments of riverside flats.

Lots of companies - particularly media and scientific companies - are based in Teddington, taking advantage of the peace and quiet, great resources and splendid location. There are great schools nearby, superb greenery and river walks, water sports and boating in plenty. Nearby are training colleges for teachers, excellent sports facilities, a thriving arts centre. Teddington is highly desirable and any property here will be whipped off the lists quickly, so if you want to view here, it's best to keep your eyes peeled.

In General:
The London boroughs are administrative centres responsible for collecting local taxes (Council Tax and Business Rates) and then spending the funds received on local services. They are run by Borough Councils who are elected by borough residents on a four year cycle. The totals that they spend will depend on the rates of tax that they levy plus funds allocated from central government and other sources.

While many of the services (schools, roads, planning, rubbish collection and social services) are standard, levels of provision will vary according to the overall political will as expressed by the voters.

Your tax liability (as a resident) will be based on the council tax band of your home. These bands are set by Valuation Officers and there is scope for appeal. The rate bands are then used to determine the amounts of tax levied. So, while the bands will remain largely constant the levels of tax can go up and, in theory, down.

You may claim discounts or exemptions based on your circumstances. For example, as the only adult in a property you can get a 25% reduction on your bill. Other reductions are available for qualifying second adults and Council Tax Benefit claimants.

There is more information available at the HM Customs & Excise website.
