Area Comments
A great area with personality and good houses in spades, Streatham is very much up and coming and has excellent places to live.
Great little stores and grocers line the high street of Streatham, local traders, cafes and shops of all kinds making this feel a unique place, rather than a clone of other areas. Of course, it's easy to compare Streatham with nearby Clapham or Balham, but it lacks the selfconsciousness of the former and is more individual than the latter.
Streatham's transport links are excellent, and it has a wonderful local green space, with Streatham Common one of the forgotten jewels of the South and easily comparable (favourably so, think many!) to Clapham Common. Great local bars and little boutiques are also found here, making it a serious rival to Clapham overall for shopping and nightlife. This is a lively and friendly place with great entertainment, swimming, bowling, cinema, and venues for gigs. Good local schools are found nearby for all ages, making it perfect for families.
Property wise Streatham is the perfect rival to its neighbours Clapham, Balham and co. There are plentiful Victorian and Edwardian family homes, with those off the Common and around Telford Park being the biggest, grandest and most desirable. Great midwar semis are also found, as well as flats and conversions appealing to the renters and to young couples and professionals.
Streatham is a great family place whose centre is also filled with enough entertainment and shopping to please anyone.

In General:
The London boroughs are administrative centres responsible for collecting local taxes (Council Tax and Business Rates) and then spending the funds received on local services. They are run by Borough Councils who are elected by borough residents on a four year cycle. The totals that they spend will depend on the rates of tax that they levy plus funds allocated from central government and other sources.
While many of the services (schools, roads, planning, rubbish collection and social services) are standard, levels of provision will vary according to the overall political will as expressed by the voters.
Your tax liability (as a resident) will be based on the council tax band of your home. These bands are set by Valuation Officers and there is scope for appeal. The rate bands are then used to determine the amounts of tax levied. So, while the bands will remain largely constant the levels of tax can go up and, in theory, down.
You may claim discounts or exemptions based on your circumstances. For example, as the only adult in a property you can get a 25% reduction on your bill. Other reductions are available for qualifying second adults and Council Tax Benefit claimants.
There is more information available at the HM Customs & Excise website.
