Area Comments
A hugely energetic area which has grown out of the shadow of the historically more fashionable areas around it, Hammersmith is full of buzz, attitude and great property.
Hammersmith is all about living amongst roads whilst not sacrificing living space. The Talgarth Road soars overhead as the flyover takes it away from the centre. The huge shopping centre provides the focal point for Hammersmith, and out from it spiral the more obvious of the area's many attractions - the Lyric theatre, the Hammersmith Palais, the Apollo, and nearby Riverside Studios amongst them. There are huge numbers of restaurants and cafes, as well as a lot of high-street shopping, in easy reach. There are great walks to be had along the Thames, with visits to lovely waterside pubs and around the bridge very popular.
A very busy area, Hammersmith is an economic as well as a transport hub, with lots of businesses using it as a base. For a long time Hammersmith was definitely in the shadow of other areas such as Kensington, Chelsea, Earls Court - but now it has carved a very different, though lucrative, property market out of thin air.
For the professional and the couple looking for great houses and flats Hammersmith is definitely worth serious consideration. There are excellent roads of smallish, but well formed Victorian houses outside the centre, which in the main areas of Hammersmith there are good numbers of flats. Along the river, large redbrick blocks can be found with excellent apartments in them. The area includes the vicinity of Ravenscourt Park, around which there are more streets of Victorian houses, mostly in terraces, which are both subdivided and available as whole properties.
A thriving area of employment and a driving need for great housing, Hammersmith is a place with a real buzz, good resources and away from the main drags, really fine Victorian properties.

In General:
The London boroughs are administrative centres responsible for collecting local taxes (Council Tax and Business Rates) and then spending the funds received on local services. They are run by Borough Councils who are elected by borough residents on a four year cycle. The totals that they spend will depend on the rates of tax that they levy plus funds allocated from central government and other sources.
While many of the services (schools, roads, planning, rubbish collection and social services) are standard, levels of provision will vary according to the overall political will as expressed by the voters.
Your tax liability (as a resident) will be based on the council tax band of your home. These bands are set by Valuation Officers and there is scope for appeal. The rate bands are then used to determine the amounts of tax levied. So, while the bands will remain largely constant the levels of tax can go up and, in theory, down.
You may claim discounts or exemptions based on your circumstances. For example, as the only adult in a property you can get a 25% reduction on your bill. Other reductions are available for qualifying second adults and Council Tax Benefit claimants.
There is more information available at the HM Customs & Excise website.
