Area Comments

A mix of the main areas it sits between - Camberwell and Dulwich - Denmark Hill is picturesque and quaint, its gentrification proceeding along modern and traditional lines.

The area is becoming more and more fashionable as it blends the funkiness of Camberwell with the up and coming feel of Dulwich. Socially it is becoming very much a place to be seen, with excellent pubs and a small selection of popular local restaurants. Local landmarks include a couple of very fine local parks including Ruskin Park and Sunray Gardens to the south; Denmark Hill has very fine views over the city, good access to larger stores and local produce (mainly down the hill in Camberwell). Landmarks include Kings College Hospital and the imposing, impressive William Booth Memorial College building. Transport is good to the rest of south London and into town via bus and train.

Of course the property here is not as uniform as that of Dulwich, and there are still some council estates, but the character of the area is friendly and gentle, with good numbers of tree lined, well spaced streets. These lead to a mixture of properties, many stunning semis and detached houses. There are of course plenty of Victorian houses around, as well as a good deal of conversions providing good, spacious apartments. Whether you're a family looking to settle or a young couple looking for the light, clean air and space of the hillside, this is a great place to be.

In General:
The London boroughs are administrative centres responsible for collecting local taxes (Council Tax and Business Rates) and then spending the funds received on local services. They are run by Borough Councils who are elected by borough residents on a four year cycle. The totals that they spend will depend on the rates of tax that they levy plus funds allocated from central government and other sources.

While many of the services (schools, roads, planning, rubbish collection and social services) are standard, levels of provision will vary according to the overall political will as expressed by the voters.

Your tax liability (as a resident) will be based on the council tax band of your home. These bands are set by Valuation Officers and there is scope for appeal. The rate bands are then used to determine the amounts of tax levied. So, while the bands will remain largely constant the levels of tax can go up and, in theory, down.

You may claim discounts or exemptions based on your circumstances. For example, as the only adult in a property you can get a 25% reduction on your bill. Other reductions are available for qualifying second adults and Council Tax Benefit claimants.

There is more information available at the HM Customs & Excise website.
