Area Comments

Whatever you want from London you can probably find in Camden on a weekend; the site of the most famous market in London, it's bustling and busy and not to be missed. But Camden is far more than its market - it's continued to be one of the trendiest, most sophisticated yet gloriously varied places in the capital for generations and looks set to continue that way.

Socially without peer, hugely mixed in terms of cultures and in terms of property, Camden contains a vast range of property. There are large numbers of flats both in dedicated blocks and in the many subdivided Victorian and Georgian houses that line the streets of this subtly upmarket area, hugely popular with the literary, media and music communities.

There are also some excellent houses both in Georgian streets, most notably those off Parkway leading down from Regent's Park, and Victorian terraces. Almost all are excellent properties, superbly maintained and beautiful - Camden might appear a little grungy, but this is perhaps more than anywhere else in London, camouflage: in reality, this is an upmarket area which dabbles in the funky.

There are affordable properties in Camden, but these are more likely to be found south, as the tangle of streets becomes Mornington Crescent and leads to the Westway. But in general, Camden properties - whether flats or houses - are very desirable, and competition is fierce for them.

Amenities of the area are second to none. It's incredibly easy to get into the West End and into many other parts of London. The bars, clubs and restaurants of Camden - whether on the lock or lining its main streets and quieter byways - are famous for their variety and quality, and the market itself is a huge draw for local boutiques and labels. For both upmarket families keen to be part of the scene, and well heeled individuals and couples, Camden is a place to be because you love its lifestyle of luxury and funkiness mixing together - and living here is a style choice as much as simply finding a home.

Borough of Camden, Camden, NW1

Borough of Camden website: Borough of Camden

In General:
The London boroughs are administrative centres responsible for collecting local taxes (Council Tax and Business Rates) and then spending the funds received on local services. They are run by Borough Councils who are elected by borough residents on a four year cycle. The totals that they spend will depend on the rates of tax that they levy plus funds allocated from central government and other sources.

While many of the services (schools, roads, planning, rubbish collection and social services) are standard, levels of provision will vary according to the overall political will as expressed by the voters.

Your tax liability (as a resident) will be based on the council tax band of your home. These bands are set by Valuation Officers and there is scope for appeal. The rate bands are then used to determine the amounts of tax levied. So, while the bands will remain largely constant the levels of tax can go up and, in theory, down.

You may claim discounts or exemptions based on your circumstances. For example, as the only adult in a property you can get a 25% reduction on your bill. Other reductions are available for qualifying second adults and Council Tax Benefit claimants.

There is more information available at the HM Customs & Excise website.
